Jonathan and I were at home alone, waiting patiently for Dana to come home from work. He was freshly bathed and dressed handsomely in the khaki slacks and blue and white argyle sweater she laid out for him this morning before she left for work. He was excited, too. His school's open house was tonight and he couldn't wait for Dana to take him as she promised. She hadn't been to school with him all year, and he was anxious for her to meet his teacher and all of his new classmates.
The phone rang. The good mood I was in immediately soured. I already knew it was Dana calling with some excuse as to why she couldn't keep her word. I should have known she wouldn't pull through. She was supposed to be home an hour ago, and the open house started in thirty minutes.
"What?" I asked into the phone when I answered it.
"I'm sorry," she apologized with a moan. "Really, I am."
"Yeah, right," I grunted. "You promised."
"Please don't be upset," she begged. "I tried everything I could to get there, but I'm just not going to be able to make it. We had a visit today from the safety inspector, unannounced, and he's making..."
I tuned out her excuses as I watched Jonathan. Once again I was going to have to tell him that his mom was too busy to take part in his life. While she was at work, doing what she loved to do, his entire life was passing her by. It wasn't fair to him.
"You promised you were going to be there for him tonight—and me, too," I reminded her.
"I promise you, this is out of my control. I would never intentionally disappoint you or Jonathan."
I didn't even know why I actually believed things would change. She couldn't even go three days without neglecting us.
"I'm sorry," she apologized. "I have to go. I'm about to get reamed by one of the board members for failing the inspection. Tell Jonathan I'll make it up to him. Promise."
"Yeah, 'cause your word is so reliable around here," I snapped, and hung up the phone before she could say anything else to make me even angrier.
"That was Mommy, wasn't it?" Jonathan asked from the living room. He'd been sitting on the couch, watching television.
I sighed. "Yeah. That was her."
"She's not coming, is she?"
"No, she's not."
"Awh, man," he griped, and threw himself against the back of the sofa in frustration. "I knew she wasn't coming. She always has to work."
"She wanted me to tell you she was sorry and that she'll make it up to you."
He folded his arms across his chest and gritted his teeth. Then, only a few moments later, he tossed his hands in the air and said, "Oh, all right."
"All right?" I asked, surprised. "You aren't mad anymore?"
He sighed. "No. Mommy has an important job. Sometimes she has to miss stuff. She said she'll make it up to me, and I believe her."
I stared at the little boy sitting on my couch and barely recognized him.
